5 Tips on At-Home Hair Color

Some people cringe at the idea, yet others dive in wholeheartedly and get excellent results. So, how do you turn an at home hair color experience into a fantastic one that looks like a million bucks but costs less than $20?

Use our tips for at home hair color and you’ll amaze everyone with the results, that’s how!

Gradual Change

Never go more than two shades lighter or darker than your current hair color. Starting small and gradually making a change will give you the best results.

Test Strip

Most at home hair color products recommend that you do a sample piece first to see if you like the results, and to make sure your scalp doesn’t have a bad reaction. We recommend doing this test in an unobvious spot.

Create Your Own Salon

Hair dye doesn’t just dye hair, one look at the red spot on my toilet seat and you’ll see what I mean. Protect everything around you from errant drips by preparing a designated hair dye area in your home.

Don’t Wash Your Hair

At home hair dyes work best if your hair isn’t freshly washed. Also, your color will last longer if you can hold out on washing it for a day or two after coloring.

Watch the Ends

The ends of your hair, especially if long, are very porous, your roots aren’t. This means that the ends will take the color more readily, so you want to concentrate on applying the color on the roots first.

Follow the Directions

Each type of at-home hair dye is different and they may even “improve” (change the directions) between your applications so always read the directions and follow them closely.
