So many skincare lines currently carry a dermatologist’s name, but the first doctor-branded complexion cure-alls came from Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD. Murad’s eponymous line of cleansers, moisturizers, masks, treatment products, and even supplements are loved by women around the world, many of whom Murad still sees as patients at his practice in El Segundo, California.
Through his work with women of all ages, Murad came to realize that it’s never too early to start taking care of your skin—yet he saw a real lack of products that taught the younger generation how to do just that. That’s why he recently launched the Clean Scene line. All five products—a cleanser, exfoliant, moisturizer, blemish spot treatment, and sun protectant—are loaded with antioxidants and other powerful ingredients that target specific skin issues as well as prevent aging.
We wanted to know more about the line, as well as Murad’s thoughts on skincare in general, so we had a chat with the doctor.
EndlessBeauty.com: What inspired you to launch the Clean Scene line?
Dr. Murad: Most of the skincare products on the market today that are geared toward teens are acne-focused. Clean Scene aims to give teens with normal complexions the healthiest skin possible, while also giving them healthy skin care habits. The products are specially formulated to keep skin in balance and protect it for the future. While adults can absolutely use the Clean Scene line, adults should use products that address their specific skincare concerns for optimal results.
EndlessBeauty.com: What is the benefit of the line’s aroma?
Dr. Murad: The Clean Scene products’ scent comes from Yumberry, an antioxidant superfruit that not only gives potent protection against stress, sun and pollution but also adds a fresh, fruity scent—and the vibrant color palette of the product, along with the scent, make cleaning your skin fun!
EndlessBeauty.com: Why are antioxidants so important in skincare products for younger women? Do women really need to be worried about aging during their teen years?
Dr. Murad: Antioxidants are the best way to fight against the potential damage of stress, sun, and pollution—environmental factors that affect all of us, including teens. While teens don’t necessarily need to worry about aging today, adopting good skin care habits while you’re young is a great way to ensure healthy skin habits later on. Your skin will thank you later!
EndlessBeauty.com: Besides using products that contain antioxidants, what are some other ways young women can start to protect their skin from aging?
Dr. Murad: Young women should use moisturizers daily to help maintain healthy, hydrated skin. SPF is also very important. While broad spectrum sun protection is essential for healthy skin, look for sunscreens that do more than just protect from sun damage. Look for moisturizers with UVA and UVB protection that also contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and hydrators. This will help strengthen the skin’s barrier to make it better able to defend itself from the sun and other environmental aggressors, like bacteria and pollution. Sunscreen will not only help prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots in the future, it can also minimize the possibility of skin cancer.
