Emmy Night 2010 with Olay Celebrity Makeup Artist Bruce Grayson

The Inside Scoop on the Makeup of the Stars

In order to get ready for the 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards, which air on Sunday, August 29, we interviewed Olay celebrity makeup artist, Bruce Grayson. We got the scoop on all the celebrities that will be strutting down the famous Nokia Theater red carpet, and the process he goes through to get each star awards show ready!

Question: What is your pre-makeup ritual? What do you use to prime the stars' faces? What are your go-to products?

Answer: “My pre-make up ritual is all about transforming skin into a beautiful, hydrated canvas for makeup. First I like to clean skin with cleansing cloths. Then I sometimes use a small amount of skin toner to remove any leftover make up. Because the Emmy Red Carpet is in the afternoon I like to protect skin from the California sun with a lotion with SPF in it. Then I use an anti-aging roller under eyes which really helps to reduce puffiness and smooth fine lines.”

Expert picks: Grayson loves Olay Daily Facial Wet Cleansing Cloths for cleansing the face, Olay Refreshing Toner for makeup removal, Olay Pro-X Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30 for protection, and Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller for decreasing under eye puffiness.

Q: What trends are you expecting to see on the red carpet this year?

A: “Eyes will be defined in soft, smoky translucent eyeshadows, in shades of peachy-gold, bronze shimmer, soft mauve, taupe-grey and beige brown. Long, voluminous lashes will play a primary role in defining eyes. False lashes will be a popular eye-catcher against softly smudged dark eyeliner in black and pewter.

Sheer foundations will allow natural, beautiful skin tone to peek through. Bronzer will be seen at the Emmys as a great end of summer look for shading and sculpting skin with hints of pink and peach blush to perk up cheeks. Sheer lipsticks in peach, mauve, beige, and pink. They will be the perfect balance to even tone bronzed skin and sultry eyes.”

Expert picks: Grayson likes CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast dual eye pencils to create quick, gorgeous smoky eyes.

Q: What star is your favorite to work with? Who have you worked with the longest?

A: “I have been very lucky to have worked with so many great celebrities over the years that it would be hard to answer that question. I've worked with Laura San Giacomo, Sara Rue, and Sarah Silverman for quite some time.”

Q: What is your inspiration for creating such beautiful looks?

A: “I have a love for the silver screen era of old Hollywood. Movies and photos from the 1940s & early 1950s. It was an amazing period for fashion, makeup, and hairstyles. I draw a great deal of inspiration from the old black and white pictures of Lauren Bacall, Veronica Lake, and Rita Hayworth. I also keep a close watch on what's happening at the catwalks during Fashion Week in NY, London, Paris, and Milan.”

Q: How do you handle all the stress? How many stars are you working on? How long does each look take? What time do you start working on stars on Sunday?

A: “I've been meditating for many years, it really helps to clear my mind and relieve stress. I work with between 10 to 15 stars on Emmy night between full make ups and touch ups in the green room. I'll start at 10:00am at one of my client’s homes and then travel (speed) to the Nokia Theater for the rest of the day and evening.”

Q: Do you know what look the star wants to create before? Do you know what they're wearing beforehand? Do you collaborate with their stylists?

A: “Yes, Yes, and Yes! I collaborate with the celebrity, the stylist, and hairdresser, so much preparation that goes into an Emmy red carpet look. We trade emails, pictures of the dress, accessories, and image references of how the hair and makeup should look. We get one shot at the red carpet so we have to communicate to make sure that we're all on the same page.”
