Four Easy Traveling Hairstyles

Simple, tool-free, and quick styles for women on the go

The last thing you need to think about when you’re traveling is carting around a blow dryer, straightener, AND curling iron. You need to focus on climbing the Alps! Seeing all the pyramids! Doing yoga on the beach! Rocking an important business presentation or networking at a conference! Your traveling hair should be simple, tool-free, and quick.

Here are four easy-does-it hairstyles that will not only look great, but last all day, whether you’re braving the elements or just the elevator. Dirty hair? No prob. These styles all actually work better with slightly dirty hair. Hair just too greasy? Snag a dry shampoo (or baby powder in a pinch) and sprinkle just a smidge on the greasy parts, then rub in. Voila! You’re back to square one, where you can choose one of these easy hairstyles:

Traveling Hairstyle: The Braid

Ah, the versatile braid. French or plain, pigtails or solo, the primitive plait is a basic go-to style with endless possibilities. For business travel, it’s best to stick to a neat single French braid, starting with smaller pieces and weaving in the rest of the hair.

For vacation, you’ve got more freedom. We suggest braiding your hair fresh out of the shower into a French braid on either side for pigtail plaits. Pigtail braids aren’t just for pre-teens, done neatly, anyone can wear the style. You can cover up with a hat or bandana in the sun, and when the sun goes down, shake hair loose for bouncy, flowy curls without a single styling tool.

Traveling Hairstyle: The Sleek Ponytail

When you’re traveling for work, a no-nonsense sleek ponytail means business. Clearing the hair out of your eyes signals you’re ready to focus. Smooth hair back into a mid-head ponytail—too high and you look like you’re ready to exercise, while too low isn’t sophisticated. Secure the ponytail with an elastic the same color as your hair.

When you’re traveling for play, you can take the sleek pony to new levels. Pull that pony as high as it will go for a dramatic effect. Make sure the tail is smooth or you’ll get more of a poof-ball effect than belle-of-the-ball, and use just a dab of hotel-provided lotion if you didn’t pack smoothing crème (because we told you that you didn’t need it). Alternatively, pull your hair low into a casual ponytail that allows sexy wisps of hair to fall forward. Here you can tie on a subtle ribbon or vibrant scarf, or top with a headband.

Traveling Hairstyle: Beachy Waves

If you’re lucky enough to be near a beach on your travels, you simply must try beach hair. Beach hair comes from the natural texture saltwater lends hair, so all you have to do is scrunch or braid your hair after you expose it to saltwater. It’s even possible for business travelers; the sexiest of all hairstyles CAN be worn for work. Simply keep it under control by pinning back the front layers with bobby pins or small clips.

Naturally, vacationers can let loose with beach hair, scrunching it up to its highest heights and letting long layers swing freely. You don’t need any products or tools to make nature’s potion work for you, you can enjoy your hair’s natural wave.

Traveling Hairstyle: Accessorized Hair

Hats and scarves are sun-exposure essentials, but they’re also travel necessities. You can almost avoid even doing your hair with a proliferation of chic hat styles in summer textures—like bowlers and fedoras in straw, engineer and bucket hats in cotton—and scarves of all lengths and fabrics—square, long, silk, cotton. You’ve got no excuse for not trying a trendy topper. For most types of work, it’s best to stick to scarves, which can be worn covering the head or as headbands.

For vacation, go wild and play with both scarves and hats, being sure to try the local trends if you can. Summer shawls are available in street markets around Europe for less than lunch, and hat styles in South Africa vary wildly from those in New York City, so be sure you stop in to a local market and check out their customary caps.

Being away from home can challenge you—especially if that means stepping back from the tools and products you usually use to embrace your natural hair texture. But traveling is the perfect time to try something new!
