It’s midnight, and there’s another drunk bachelorette in a tacky tiara and penis necklaces dancing on top of a bar downtown. Sure, it’s your last chance to really let loose as an unmarried woman, but is drunken debauchery really how you want to say sayonara to your single days?
We’ve come up with a bunch of great healthy alternatives—some healthier than others—to the traditional Hangover-inspired (and inducing) bachelorette party, and we consulted with Jessica Sharratt, a former event planner for Wolfgang Puck in Los Angeles, for the best ways to execute your healthy bachelorette party.
Sharratt, who traded her party-planning days for a career personal training, is one of only 40 women nationwide who made the cut to compete in the prestigious CrossFit Games in July. She says, “Spa day is my favorite! You get to relax with your girls, unwind, and get pampered before the big day.” A spa day is also a great stress reliever, whereas going out drinking all night is likely to cause your body more stress. The only tricky part, Sharratt cautions, could be who foots the bill for such an expensive bachelorette bash. The bride and maid of honor should have a frank talk about expectations and budgets before planning a spa day.
“Rent a house boat or lakehouse to spend the day and/or night. You get away from it all and get to spend lots of quality time with your bridesmaids, who should be your besties.” At the lake, you can swim, boat, waterski, wakeboard, tube, or just catch some rays—using lots of sunscreen, as no one wants to be burnt on their wedding day. At night, nothing is better than grilling veggies and lean meat for dinner, capped by s’mores and gossip around a fire (or a BBQ pit).
Even the sassiest bride could probably pick up some moves to keep her new marriage spicy. Cardio striptease or stripper classes, like the ones from Las Vegas’s famous Stripper101, offer brides and bridesmaids the chance to be silly, learn new dance moves, and bond with the group. Sharratt says, “I love the cardio strip tease idea. Maybe a few cocktails will help you find your inner stripper?”
In for a tamer bachelorette bash? Another party plan approved by active, athletic Sharratt involves the bridal party committing to running (or run-walking) a 5K or 10K, followed by a brunch and pedicures. Running together is a great workout and time to bond with your bridemaids, but you still get to splurge on mimosas (guilt-free!) at brunch later. “It’s a great combination of activity and relaxation,” says Sharrat.
The quintessential girls weekend activity is the wine tour, and there’s no better time to take a weekend away in Napa, Portland, or the Texas Hill Country than the bachelorette party. You get to try a bunch of different wines, compare notes, and spend plenty of time talking and laughing with your ladies. If you’re lucky enough to live near a wine trail, it’s even easier to make this your healthy(ish) celebration. Sharrat’s advice? “I love wine! Just make sure you hire a driver, you don’t want anyone to have to worry about how you’re getting from winery to winery!”
No matter what you (or your maid of honor) are planning to celebrate your impending marriage, keep in mind what you want most from the party: to spend one incredibly fun night/morning/weekend with your closest friends.
To a healthy, safe, and memorable bachelorette party!

Sometimes we get carried away while having fun; but we need to be sensible. These party ideas are truly healthy and most importantly interesting. Me and my friends are now planning to go to Washington DC; we would be celebrating Washington DC New Years Eve.
Glad I saw this. It reminds me of the movie The Hangover. Except with girls. I think there are some great ideas here, and I'm definitely going to let some of my female friends see this. They could learn a thing or two about parties before their big day.
I'm all for the cardio strip tease! I would absolutely love do to this for my bachelorette party - it beats running around at bars and ingesting TONS of calories on alcohol!
Awesome ideas. Unfortunately, my bachelorette party was the toxic going downtown, drinking too much kind of party. I wish I had done the spa day, that sounds amazing.
These are great ideas. So many of my friends have recently gotten engaged...I'll definitely keep these in mind.
I never would have thought of a "Runaway Bride" themed bachelorette party, but that's a great idea!
As a maid of honor, I planned Pub Golf, which was a ton of fun ... but still pretty disastrously unhealthy :-)
