How to Be Smart About Drinking Alcohol

Is Alcohol All That Bad for You?

A Long Island Iced Tea boasts an incredible 780 calories--that’s a meal or two for the average woman. Despite research that moderate alcohol consumption can have certain health benefits, women have to be careful with justifying their drinking.

While alcohol is not calorie-free, more evidence is showing that if you consume alcohol moderately (ONE drink, a few times a week), there may be some health benefits (and of course risks). One drink means 12 ounces of beer or malt beverage, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor.

In Medical News Today, Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, an internist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, shows research that moderate drinking does have its benefits. Alcohol can:

  • Lower your risk for heart disease.
  • Reduce your risk for heart attack by acting as a blood thinner.
  • Lower your risk of diabetes by improving your body’s ability to absorb insulin.
  • Reduce dementia in adults over 70.

However, some of the risks of even moderate drinking specific to women include increased susceptibility to drinking-related liver disease and increased risk for breast cancer. While doctors still disagree on what the research and claims, doctors everywhere recommend you don’t start drinking JUST for the health benefits!

If I Want To Drink, What Should I Drink?

Wine. Rule to live by: the higher the percentage of alcohol, the more calories that come along with it. A low-calorie option is white zinfandel, which comes in at around 80 calories per serving.

Liquor. Avoid liqueurs—they're almost all sugar—and cocktails that are made from multiple mixers. Everybody’s favorite margarita has an average of 740 calories for every 10 ounces! You should also bypass piña coladas (644), chocolate martinis (438), and white Russians (425). Try lower calorie options like a bloody Mary (118), rum and diet soda (100), or mimosas (75).

Beer. Stay away from dark, stout beers or microbrews (these put you well over 150 calories). Instead, opt for lighter versions, such as MGD 64 (which has 64 calories per serving) or Bud Select-55 (which only has 55 calories per serving).

The key to getting the health benefits of alcohol is definitely in moderation, ladies! As long as you don’t binge on Long Island Iced Teas, and you stick to a low-cal beer or mimosa, it seems there's no harm, no foul.
