How to Bring New Mom Hair Back to Life

Banish Follicle Frump

Congratulations! The baby has arrived and you’re finally starting to get the hang of this mommy thing.  You’ve mastered changing diapers in the dark, can handle spit up with ease, and manage feeding the baby and yourself simultaneously.  You’ve even figured out how to squeeze in a shower here and there.  But wait, what’s that in the shower drain?  Is that my hair?

Relax; you’re not going to go completely bald.  It may seem like there’s more hair on your hairbrush than stuck to your head, but the good news is the loss is only temporary.  The bad news is, all that effortlessly shiny and healthy hair you’ve been sporting for that last nine months is, for now at least, only a memory.  Post-baby hormone fluctuations often leave hair looking dull and a little thinned out.  You might also notice your color is not quite as bright, particularly if you chose to forgo coloring while pregnant.  And styling, who has time for that these days?

Fortunately these issues are easily fixed; it’s just not so effortless anymore.  It’s time to let daddy practice his diapering skills and schedule a little mommy time.

Salon owner and stylist Jonathan Nuckles of The Nuckles Salon in Charlottesville, Virginia has a few suggestions for new mommies facing follicle frump. “To bring back vibrancy and shine, consider opting for a demi-permanent color glaze or clear gloss.  These are deposit only products, meaning there is no lightening or color lifting from the hair,” said Jonathan.  Demi-permanent color is big on shine and longer lasting, an excellent option for busy new mothers.

When it comes to hairstyles, budding soccer moms tend to favor the ponytail.  Yes, we know it’s easy and that’s a good thing, but that doesn’t mean you have to sport a pony with no pizzazz.  “Consider adding some volume to the root and giving it a little lift before tying it back.  Or opt for a tail that’s slightly to the side for a more updated look,” Jonathan suggested.  You can even add a little braid or a fashionable barrette or hair tie. (Please note that a fashionable hair tie is in no way to be confused with a scrunchy.  If you own a scrunchy or know someone who does, do yourself and them a favor and throw it out.  Now.)

Short cuts are also a great option for a quick and easy modern look.  They dry quickly and can often be styled with little more than some pomade and your fingers.  This is not a time to make drastic changes to your look, however. “With all those post-baby hormones, emotions can run pretty high.  Radical changes to your cut or color will only end in tears and more time at the salon,” warns Jonathan.

Every new mom deserves to look great.  “Investing in good quality products really pays off in the long run.  Items like dry shampoo can be a serious time saver,” said Jonathan.  Finally for a little glamour, Jonathan recommends “dusting off the old hot rollers.”  We’re not talking about 80s style perms or tight curls.  “For a softer look brush hair out into loose waves, or add a little paste for a textured, messy look,” said Jonathan.

It may take just a bit more effort, but when it comes down to it, a sassy mom is a happy mom.
