Lash Serums: Are They Worth All The Hype?

We talk to real women to get to the bottom of the claims

With celebrity endorsers like Brooke Shields and Claire Daines, lash serums must be beneficial, right?!

EndlessBeauty.com was curious about all the hype surrounding these serums, so we narrowed it down to the three most popular serums: RevitaLash, Latisse, and L’Oreal Lash Serum (the one I actually tried for 14 days!). Read on for the benefits, risks, costs, and a few testimonials for each one from real users!

RevitaLash—“Double-Duty Brow and Lash Enhancer”

Benefits:

  • Longer, fuller, darker lashes no matter how short or brittle your current lashes are
  • Results in 3-10 weeks
  • Can be used on sparse eyebrows
  • Can be used on men’s lashes
  • 3 month’s supply $98 from RevitaLash.com

Side effects:

  • Irritation and redness
  • Possible iris darkening

Real Women Report:

“I started using RevitaLash over a year ago. I used it daily for about 3 months and I'd say after about 2-3 weeks I started to notice a difference. After a couple of months I was actually asked if I was wearing false eyelashes. The difference was that significant. I tapered off to once or twice a week and then as infrequently as once or twice a month. If I get real lazy I will use it again everyday for a week and then taper back off. It does sting if you get it in your eyes, but other than that I've noticed no side effects and I really love it!”
- Louise from New York

“I started using RevitaLash when I noticed that my once long thick lashes were thinning. I was having my makeup done for an occasion and my makeup artist suggested I try it. I used the product for approximately 2 months. I started seeing results in about one week. My eyelashes started growing. I did not have any negative results from the serum other than a little burning if I applied too much serum. After about 2 months of use, my eyelashes grew so much that they actually got in the way of my glasses.

I stopped using the product and every so often I use it for a week and my lashes thicken up. I really like the product and would endorse it wholeheartedly. I may even start using it on my eyebrows which are also thinning. Lastly, there is a RevitaLash mascara that is amazing. It enhances my already thick, long lashes.”

Latisse—“Nearly 1.5 Million People Served”

Benefits:

  • Works from the inside of the lash out
  • Longer lashes
  • Fuller lashes
  • Darker lashes
  • Can also be used on sparse eyebrows
  • Full results after week 16
  • FDA approved
  • Latisse is prescription only; costs around $120

Side effects:

  • Itching sensation in the eyes
  • Eye redness
  • Eyelid skin darkening
  • Iris pigmentation

Real Women Report:

“I started using Latisse when it was first on the market. I used it every night after I cleansed my face. It is just one simple swipe across each eyelid line. After about one week of use, I started noticing some of the lashes were considerably longer. Within about 3 weeks, they were brushing up against the lens of my sunglasses. I did not have any side effects other than longer, fuller eyelashes! After I stopped using Latisse, over the course of 4 weeks, my eyelashes gradually went back to their former state. I stopped using Latisse after our wedding (I needed a break from all that bridal primping and maintenance!). But as of last week, I have started back again. I missed my doe-like lashes!”
- Jessica from Kentucky

“I first started using Latisse when it first came on the market because as a dermatologist I knew I would be prescribing it and I wanted to see if it would work. I initially used it in the evening as the company suggested and started seeing results after 2 months. My lashes got longer and thicker, by 4 months I got the completely result which was lash darkening, lengthening and thickening. It was quite a dramatic result and when wearing mascara it looked as though I was wearing false eyelashes.

I have very sensitive eyes and eye allergies, in the first week I did experience some itching but I did get through it. I have dark brown eyes and dark hair and I did notice some discoloration under my eyes from the product. I tend to be darker under my eyes and to prevent further discoloration, I decided to use Latisse every other day and strictly in morning time. I still use Latisse and am very pleased with the results.”

L’Oreal Paris Lash Boosting Serum—“The Cost-Concerned Customer’s Saving Grace”

Benefits:

  • Reinforce lashes
  • Condition lashes
  • Protect your lashes
  • Make lashes appear smoother and shinier
  • L'Oreal Paris Lash Boosting Serum is available at drugstores for around $15!

Side Effects:

  • Itching
  • Redness

Real Women Report:

“I did an express-experiment. I used the serum for two weeks, twice daily. My lashes are pretty full and thick, but I was curious to see what L’Oreal was bringing to the table. It was definitely a cheaper alternative to the prescription serums (only $15). I’ll admit I was a little skeptical. But after two weeks of using only the serum (L’Oreal recommends using it with their mascara), my lashes no longer fall out when I remove my eye makeup, which is a huge improvement for me. I do believe that if you use it for 4 weeks or longer, in conjunction with their mascara infused with the serum, that you will undoubtedly see results!”
- Catherine from Texas

Even though these lash serums seem like they really work and are harmless, if you have any questions, see your doctor. She can tell you if one is likely to interfere with any existing eye conditions you might have.
