Minimalist Makeover: How to Travel with Just the Beauty Basics

Double-Duty Beauty Products Cut Down Packing

Woman packing trouble

There are women who trek through foreign lands with nary more than a ponytail holder and manage to look fantastic. We’re looking at you, Gisele.

And then there are the rest of us. For the mere mortals, we culled suggestions from frequent flyers and beauty experts that are worth their weight in airline miles. Check the categories below for new ways to fill your makeup bag—that is, with room to spare.

Double-Duty Beauty Basics: Oils

Suited for your face (won’t clog pores) but heavy-duty enough for hands and hair, there are several oils that are great travel picks. Air travel can dry you out, so using a moisture-rich oil will keep your face and hands fresh-looking—and preserve your youth capital, as skin dryness speeds up visible aging. As for your hair, a light rub of the oil can smooth and polish hair, while a dab on the ends will keep split ends at bay.

  • Shea Oil is not only a great moisturizer for face, body, hair, and nails, but more research is proving it actually stimulates collagen production for younger-looking skin. Try Galen Labs Shea Oil (1.7 ounces, $38)
  • More exotic Emu Oil contains 22 essential fatty acids, including Omega 3, 6, and 9, so it acts as both a moisturizer and wound-healing agent for minor scratches and burns, plus can help alleviate stiff and swollen joints and muscles from cramped planes, trains, and cars or strenuous hikes. Try Thunder Ridge Emu's 2-ounce Emu Oil. ($28 for 3 bottles)
  • Camellia oil has been used for centuries in Asia and is rich in fatty acids and vitamins A & B. Its light, quick-absorbing texture is perfect for face, hair, and nails. Try the Russell Organics version. (2 ounces, $22)

Double-Duty Beauty Basics: Balm

Similar to oil, balm can moisturize hands and lips, calm fly-aways on hair, and alleviate irritations due to exposure to the elements. Kirsten Owens, editor-in-chief of TravelingFashionista.com says, “When traveling, especially now, more and more people are opting to strictly bring carry-on bags … space is limited, and products that can work for multiple purposes become more and more important!”

  • Owens recommends Smith’s Rosebud Salve; she says it's a high-quality steal at only $6.
  • You could also try Rock Hill Lavender's balm, a soothing salve that Rock Hill owner Jonathan Nowling tells us customers use on everything: “Customers tell us they have used it successfully on bee stings, burns, sunburn and windburn, psoriasis, eczema, cracked heels from running, radiation scars, and wrinkles.” (1.85 ounces, $9).

Double-Duty Beauty Basics: Color Sticks & Palettes

Forget the temptation to pack multiple lipsticks, blushes, eyeshadows, and liners to get your best look. Choose products that can really pull their carry-on weight by doubling their placement on the face. Blush/lipstick combos work because they’re similar in color but vary in intensity. Stick to pinks, corals, and bricks, says Barbara DesChamps, image consultant and author of It's In The Bag: The Complete Guide to Lightweight Travel, available from chateaupublishing.com.

  • Robin Frank, VP of online store OrganicBeautyNow.com, recommends 100% Pure's Fruit Pigmented Rouge Pot for its beautiful color and solid, carry-on friendly packaging.
  • Cynthia Sally, Professional Makeup Artist and Owner of Cynthia Sally Makeup & Hair Artistry, suggests Stila Convertible Colors: “I use them while on vacation for my cheeks and lips. When used as a blush, it gives a healthy glow on the cheeks. I also love dabbing a little bit on my lips for a little pop of color. Perfect for the beach! My favorite color is Peony.” Formulated to work together, Stila Travel Girl Palettes are slim compacts of travel-themed palettes that include four eye shadow colors and one convertible color (for lips and cheeks) for just $10.

Double-Duty Beauty Basics: Face Wipes

Easy to pass through security and even easier to use and dispose of, face wipes not only remove makeup at night, they can refresh your face after a long flight or car ride. Just make sure to steer clear of wipes that include alcohol, as it has a drying effect on skin.

  • Try Skyn Iceland Glacial Cleansing Cloths, sheets made with coconut, cucumber, and kelp, among other natural ingredients. The cloths were a finalist in the Cosmetic Executive Women awards (30 sheets, $15).
  • Becky Sturm, CEO & Founder of StormSister Spatique, says her favorite facial wipes are L’Amande Refresher & Make-up Remover pads. The Italian company’s wipes are especially delicate and emollient, says Sturm: “The EU regulates their beauty industry, so they are a much better product per anything I have found in the US.”

I always look for smaller size of the same products I always use, I've never thought of changing up my products to multitasking items like this. Great suggestion!
