I’m telling you this story for two reasons. One, some of you may be making New Year’s resolutions to lose weight. And two, I just find it interesting and want to share.
A funny thing happened when I recently spent a week at The Pritikin Health & Longevity Spa in Miami, Florida. This part was expected: after one week, I returned home and threw away my blood pressure medication. I had heard that most people who go to Pritikin and are on meds for pre-diabetes and/or high blood pressure end up leaving OFF their medications.
I had begun taking a mild diuretic for my blood pressure a couple of years prior, after my doctor told me I was pre-hypertensive. The systolic--the top number in the reading--consistently read over 130. "You can try a low-salt diet," he said, "OR … you can take one of these pills each day." At the time, a low-salt diet seemed like too much work, so I opted for the alternative. Besides, I rarely even reached for the salt shaker. So what did salt have to do with it? (Apparently, a LOT. The hidden salts I was getting in things like processed foods, salad dressings, breads, and cereals was enough to send my blood pressure into the upper stratosphere.)
But here's the totally unexpected part: I lost FIVE pounds. The last time I lost five pounds in one week was the winter of 2004, when I was sidelined with such a vicious stomach flu I thought I'd never eat again. And lately, I'd failed miserably and repeatedly at shedding those unwanted pesky five-plus pounds that hung around my middle like stubborn mildew clings to a damp basement. I began to accept that they were here to stay.
How did weight come off? I was eating dessert after dinner each night (pumpkin pie, cheesecake, chocolate mousse!); I was eating in between meals (hearty veggie soup, baked potato skins, edamame and broccoli dip); I was never hungry and always satisfied. I still ate pasta, potatoes, rice.
The Pritikin diet emphasizes unrefined, minimally processed carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes such as beans and peas, and starchy vegetables like potatoes and yams. And if you're a carnivore, you might bristle at the thought of eating only 4 ounces of animal protein a day. (In case you don't know, four ounces = the size of a deck of cards. That's all.) It might take you a bit of adjustment.
But for me, a quasi-vegetarian who hasn't eaten meat in 30 years and loves fruit and vegetables and everything else associated with Pritikin's philosophy of healthy eating, it was the most painless--and accidental--way to drop weight. I don't believe in dieting. I believe in educating yourself and changing your patterns. And that could be why the program worked so well.
The Pritikin Program, based on science and research, was the first diet-and-exercise program to demonstrate the link between diet and conquering disease more than 30 years ago. Its amazing results have been documented in over 110 peer-reviewed medical journals. It's healthy for your heart and your entire body--it reduces the risk factors of heart disease, controls type-2 diabetes, reduces key factors for breast, colon, and prostate cancer and promotes healthy, sustainable weight loss.
Some of the biggest--and easiest--changes I've made? I:
And, if you are still hungry for more, your comment will automatically enter you and give you a chance to win the book,The Pritikin Edge, which gives you in-depth information on their philosophy, including a 2-week sample menu.

Thanks for sharing this information. I really like your way of expressing the opinions and sharing the information. It is good to move as chance bring new things in life, paves the way for advancement, etc. But it is well known to everyone that moving to new location with bulk of goods is not an easy task to move or shift from one place to other place because I have experienced about that and I face the problem like that. There I go to village near to my city faced that problem there.

Nice Article and thank you for the tips! This is really useful for me when it comes to losing/ maintaining my weight. Aside from wearing the right shoes, since im using Nike running shoes, this is also important too.
Glad you found this info helpful, Jillian. Keep up the good work!
Wow to lose 5 pounds without even thinking about it would be great. I find that you're right--when I exercise I do rationalize that I can eat more. But truth be told, I'm just hungrier. I'm trying to figure out the right amount of protein after my workout so that I feel satisfied.
True, exercise can make you hungrier. There are so many differing opinions on the best things/times to eat before and after exercise. I think I'll need to do some research into that - a very important topic.
It's great to hear about the Pritikin diet again. Some peoople who are in the anti-carb crowd may have thought this diet has gone out of vogue. But, in fact, it's so in keeping with a healthy diet and lifestyle that everyone, whether they want to lose weight or not, should consider the Pritikin diet or even modifications of it.

It's true. The best thing about the Pritikin diet, in my opinion, is that the foods involved are such healthy foods; things you should be incorporating into your everyday diet, like fresh fruits and veggies and lots of whole grains.
I find it helps, too, simply not to have certain foods lying around, begging to be eaten. Adios, tortilla chips. Still working on the salt shaker, though.
Yes, when the food is seen, it is *heard* too, isn't it? How about hiding the salt shaker, or at the very least, keeping it off the table- would that help?
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This post in incredibly timely for me. I love the suggestions and, in fact, bookmarking the post for reference. Years ago my parents went to Pritikin when it was in Santa Monica and I joined them for lunch one day. It was delicious and filling. I have one of the original cookbooks from those days!
How interesting that you ate at Pritikin. I agree that their food is excellent and yes, very filling and satisfying. Have you cooked anything from the book, I wonder?
Sounds like a very nice and healthy way to lose some weight, Sheryl! I have been trying to eat in a more whole foods sustainable way. I know I feel so much better eating an apple than a fruit roll-up...
Yes, I'd say it was a very nice way and a nice surprise to boot. I'm in agreement about the apple vs. the fruit roll-up; better crunch, too...
I've been reaching for the carrot sticks myself, but so far have not lost weight. I really enjoyed reading about your stay at Pritikin at the time. I'm glad that you lost the weight without making a concerted effort. I realized about salt when I was pregnant. With my first child, I used salt and gained way too many pounds. No salt shaker for my second. No salt, in fact, in the food to my ex-husband's distress. The birth was much easier. (I know this is off-topic, but wanted to share in case anyone out there is pregnant and needs an extra push to start ditching the salt.)
That's interesting about the salt/labor connection. I wonder if there's ever been anything studied on that? Glad the second birth went more smoothly, at any rate~
I need to do the "limit the olive oil" tip as well as have healthy snacks on hand. I only ever dip into snack chips because healthy options are not available.
How about a pantry makeover? That would help fill it up with some healthy options so you aren't tempted to eat those snack chips!
