My Hula Hoop Hoopla: The Newest Fitness Trend

"What’s that big round thing in the family room?" my 23-year old son asked. He stopped home to watch the Super Bowl with my husband, not passing up an opportunity to veg out on the couch and devour an unheard-of amount of calories and drink in one sitting.

"That’s my new hoola hoop!" I exclaimed. I ran out to buy it after I saw an excerpt of a hula hoop performance on the Dr. Oz Show.

"Just like the one I used to use for hours and hours when I was a kid." I then got all nostalgic and went on about how I loved to hula hoop, telling him all about the contests we had in my neighborhood.

"Um hum," he distractedly answered between mouthfuls. And I bragged—just a bit—about my hard-to-beat reputation as the leading hula hoop contender.

"Here—let me show you how it works," I offered, trying to catch his attention during a commercial break. What was I thinking? Not only did I fail to pry his eyes off the TV set, but I failed miserably at keeping the hoop in play for more than about 3 seconds. It fell swiftly to the floor. I was breathless and sweaty, not to mention frustrated and a wee bit embarrassed. My husband glanced my way, forcing a smile.

What happened to my past history of hula-hoop-neighborhood-champ? What was once so easy, so effortless is now so ... hard.

Defeated, I tiptoed away and retreated to my office to do a little research—and sneak in a little practice.

It's no wonder that hula hooping is back in vogue as a way of shaping up and burning an estimated 200 calories in 30 minutes. That is, um, how many nachos and guacamole, you Super-Bowl-gluttons? Take that.

When I was a young kid, I didn't grab the hula hoop with an eye toward increasing the flow of blood to my brain, nor with the hope of restoring sagging energy. Come to think of it, neither did I use it because it would strengthen my hips and knees, rev up my metabolism, tone my torso, or help strengthen my spine. And when I did some fancy moves with the hoop slung over each arm, I had no intention of strengthening sagging triceps or toning up my deltoids. But hula hooping does all those things.

So what was it that was making it so hard this time? I mean, I might be older, but I still am pretty good at keeping up at the gym. Maybe I was over-thinking the whole thing. I closed my eyes, trying to remember how I did it all those years ago. One foot slightly in front of the other. A slight rocking motion with the hips.

And then, I remembered something that wasn't around when I wasn’t a kid: the Internet. I even found a website dedicated to the sport. Help is at hand.

At www.hooping.org, I not only learned about the history of hooping (hint: it predates my ascent into it as a kid by a few thousand years), but I picked up some helpful tips on exactly how to do it too. Then, on to YouTube, where I could watch an actual live demonstration of a woman—not a young kid!—hula hooping effortlessly.

Two hours into the Super Bowl, with some time devoted to honing my new/old skills, I returned to the family room to defend my title.

"Okay, guys, are you ready for me to show you now?"

They groaned. "Can't you wait until the game is over?" my husband pleaded.

It may not have come close to the halftime show, but it was nonetheless entertaining. I managed to keep the hoop in motion for more than a few seconds. And when I was finished, my son walked over, grabbed the hoop out of my hands and pulled it over his head, ready to test it out. Positioning it around his waist, he tried it. 

If that wasn't equivalent to a game-changing fumble, I don't know what was.

Mark my words: hula hoops are coming back!

I wanted to share a quick story about hula hooping. Last year I was looking into do a few cosmetic updates, botox, and even possibly the lifestyle lift. Then a friend of mine invited me to a workout class that included the hula hoop. This has helped me drop 10 pounds of fat and gain 5 pounds of muscle, plus it has tighted my skin. I know people may not believe it, but it's such an all over body workout that every muscle in your body is working hard. So go get a hula hoop!

Hi! I recently grabbed the hula hoop at my daughter's urging and, omg, it just dropped to the floor! I also was an amazing "hula-hooper" in my day.... I think I remember walking while the hula hoop was circling my waist. I also remember it rising up to my neck and down to my knees ~ all while spinning around my body. I did manage to get the hang of it recently and it felt like an amazing workout. You reminded me that I definitely need to buy one. Thank you for a great article!

Well, I hate to brag -- but I'm a former hula-hooping champ myself. Week after week, in the early 80s, I won the tense competitions at the Holiday Inn South in Charlottesville, Virginia. The prize was, invariably, a free weekend at the Holiday Inn South. During both my pregnancies, I also hula-hooped and promptly went into labor; believe me, it's hard to hula hoop when you're nine months pregnant.

I tried a hula hoop fitness class a few years ago and it is HARD work. But it's fun. A new recreation center featuring tons of trampolines recently opened and they offer classes called "Skyrobics." Methinks I need to try that class, too!

I love that I came upon this article directly after arriving home from my weekly hoop dancing class.

I gathered up my courage and attended my very first hoop dancing class maybe two or three years ago. I immediately fell in love. Now, I have a rainbow-colored hoop (with red glitter tape!), a smaller collapsible hoop (for attending hoop jams in the city!), and a weighted hoop, for simpler, gut-busting hooping. It's my number one favorite way to work out, probably because it's so damn fun (and also quite invigorating).

In addition to hooping.org, Hoopnotica is another great resource, for events, hoops (and other hoop supplies), training videos, etc. Anyone wanna hoop jam? :)
