Nurturing Your Nails

Sometimes we forget that our fingernails and toenails are living things in need of attention. We often abuse our nails, and make them the source of a few bad habits. The good news is that healthy nails are pretty nails, so the work put into them will show. By following a few simple rules, we can transform the way we view and treat our twenty prettiest friends.

Four Ways to Nurture Your Nails

Hydrate.  Nails need hydration too. Don’t forget to rub lotion over your nails when applying it post-shower.  For added moisture, rub petroleum jelly or olive oil over your fingers and toes.  Most importantly, before you hydrate your nails, they must be completely dry (ironic, we know).  By making sure to fully dry hands and feet after showering or washing the dishes, you will prevent fungi from growing in the damp nail bed.

Protect.  Bacteria growth is a direct result of prolonged moisture. Let sweaty shoes air- dry and change damp socks immediately. Try using rubber gloves when washing the dishes, and always give hands and feet a two-minute towel drying session if they do get wet. Try to avoid nail biting at all costs – it damages the nail and makes it more prone to infection. If you have brittle or fragile nails, put on a hardening polish for added strength. Although bare feet are fun and sexy, steer clear of germs by not going barefoot in public places.

Groom.  Well groomed nails are a sign of attention to health; groom often, but use caution! Nails are fragile, and over-grooming can have painful results.  For example, buffing your nails will make them shiny, and also stimulate the blood flow to the nail; excessive buffing, however, will wear the nail too thin. Also, always cut finger and toenails straight across, and use an Emory board to round down the edges. This ensures that you won’t cut the corners too close to the nail bed. Avoid a straight-on force when pushing your cuticles back; instead come in at an angle to reduce the damage done to the nail.

Learn.  Some nail irregularities are normal and/or temporary. However, if you are experiencing yellowish discoloration, opaque or white coloring, separation of the nail and the nail bed, spotting or curled nails, you should speak with a health professional. Nail infections can be dangerous and contagious. If your nails aren’t smooth and consistent in color, you may have a more serious problem that should not be ignored.
