Experiencing stress for long periods of time can be harmful to your body and take a toll on your beauty. Instead of banging your head on your desk, there are many healthier ways to give your body and mind a little bit of a break. Below are seven simple strategies to try.

  1. Breathe.  With your eyes closed, take a deep breath in, holding in the air for a few seconds.  Then, slowly release your breath, focusing only on your breathing. Repeat ten times, or as much as you feel necessary. Giving your eyes, body, and mind a break will have an immediate calming effect. If space allows, lie on the floor and use the same breathing pattern. Focus on relaxing each part of your body, beginning with your feet, and slowly moving up to your head.  The focus will shift your mind from its stress, and give your entire body some much needed rest & relaxation.

  2. Sweat it out.  The ultimate stress reliever is a good workout. Endorphins, anyone? Head to the gym, even if it is not your normal gym time. If you can’t leave work, head outside for a brisk walk around the office. Removing yourself from the stressful situation and releasing the tension through exercise is a quick way to regroup. Not to mention it’s good for your waistline!

  3. Snack.  Try eating a low-fat snack for a break from stress and a boost of energy. Need a drink? Try some green tea. Avoid caffeine intake if at all possible. The snack will take your attention away from your stress for a moment, and give you a bit of “oomph” to continue on.

  4. Massage out the stress. Trade massages with a co-worker, or spend money on a professional massage. The release of muscle tension will allow you to re-focus on your daily tasks. A revitalized you will help you feel more physically and mentally motivated.

  5. Stretch. Stretching muscles is a good way to relieve some built-up muscle tension and stress. It increases blood flow to the muscles, and decreases the production of stress hormones. Stretching a few minutes every few hours will make you feel more alert and productive, and also help your flexibility.

  6. Silence/Sound. To eliminate stress, try turning off anything that makes noise, including your computer. Turn off the lights, close your eyes, and sit in silence. Take time to think about nothing except the quiet around you. If the thought of silence drives you crazy, blast a favorite song. 

  7. Focus on neck and shoulders. Especially if you’re sitting in a chair all day, take a few minutes to work on your neck and shoulders. Start by slowly shrugging your shoulders up and down, then rotating them in circular motions. After they are relaxed, slowly tilt your head all the way back, and then carefully rotate it clockwise three times. Repeat counterclockwise. Then clasp your hands together and push them as far away from your body as possible. Take a deep breath, and feel the stress leave your body.
