The Truth about Acne

skin flaw

When it comes to acne, there is an endless supply of tips that many of us tend to follow whether or not we know if there is actually truth behind them. We have uncovered the reality of four common myths about acne that might surprise you!

Myth: The more you wash your face, the fewer breakouts you will have.

False. Although regularly cleansing your face is an important daily task, washing your skin too frequently may irritate your pores, causing acne to become worse. A facial cleanser is a great product to use for removing excess oil, along with dirt and dead skin cells from the surface of skin, but should only be used twice a day. If using a wash cloth to cleanse your face, be sure to be very gentle or just use your fingers.

Myth: Your diet directly affects your acne.

False. There have been no scientific findings that have connected acne to diet. No matter what you eat, it will not cause or prevent you from breaking out. However, concentrating on a healthy diet can help you feel better about yourself, thus creating the confidence you need to look and feel beautiful.

Myth: Wearing makeup can cause acne.

True & False. When purchasing makeup, it is important to look for products that are hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, which means the ingredients are fragrance-free and will not clog pores.  It is best to use products that are powder- based instead of liquids that tend to be oil-based. The powder can also help absorb any excess oil on your skin. In addition, it is important to remember that makeup applicators tend to collect acne-causing bacteria, so be sure to clean them two-three times a week with warm water and antibacterial soap.

Myth: Being exposed to ultra violet (UV) rays from the sun or tanning bed will help clear up acne.

False. The redness of a tan or sunburn may temporarily mask the appearance of acne, but will eventually cause skin to become dry and irritated in the long run. When you go out in the sun, always be sure to use a brand of sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 and that is labeled non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic.
