We’ve all been there before - shopping from store to store, nearing a break down as we try and find the perfect pair of jeans or dress. In store #1, we're wearing a size 6 and feeling great, but in store #2, we're in a size 10, feeling, well…not so great. So what is it? Who’s right? Are we the size 6 or the size 10? Well, come to find out, it all depends not on your actual size but where you’re shopping and who you’re wearing. Esquire Men’s magazine reported a four-inch waist difference in various alleged "size 36" pants, all of which were clearly not 36 inches. The pants actually measured to be between 37-41 inches, depending on the designer. This crazy phenomenon is what the industry calls 'vanity sizing'.
The Wikipedia definition of vanity sizing, or size inflation, is the phenomenon of ready-to-wear clothing of the same nominal size (size 4, 6, 8, etc) becoming larger over time. Vanity sizing tends to occur in places where clothing sizes are not standardized, such as the United States.
The reasons why designers began inflation of sizes are varied; from the introductions of the 0 and 00, to obesity in America and companies catering to their demographics.
So how do we know what our true size is and how do we avoid those mere meltdowns as we are forced into a bigger size than we assumed? Here’s my recommendation: go see a tailor or seamstress and have them take your measurements. This will give you a reference point. Then, it's time to do some research. Hop online and check out your favorite stores' sizing charts. Cross-reference your measurements to the store’s size chart. You’ll be surprised how much this can vary from store to store, but at least you’ll be able to cut down your try-on’s in the dressing room. Also, be aware of the area of the store you're shopping in and keep in mind that designer clothing often has a smaller fit than ready-to-wear. European designers may also have a slightly smaller fit. Last, make people aware. If you try something on and it is not a true fit according to the store or designer's sizing chart, let them know. One of the best indicators to fit is customer feedback. Many websites, like Urban Outfitters and Target, have a customer review of each item.
With a little research and information you can make those trips to the fitting room a little more enjoyable, no matter what size you are.
