While we may be consuming less when it comes to certain items during our ongoing recession, makeup sales have risen a surprising 9% since last year.
What is even more surprising is that the majority of the makeup sales are derived from high-end cosmetic companies. That being said, it is only inevitable that designer cosmetic companies would seek to extend their profits, and are doing exactly that.
The New York Times recently reported that these high-end designer cosmetic companies are developing new products such as lipstick that will cost $40 and up. Why so expensive? The inclusion of ingredients such as caviar, retinol and diamond flecks.
Gisela Ballard, executive director of marketing for Clé de Peau Beauté, which is owned by Shiseido, explained their reasoning behind the cost for their $60 retinol infused lipstick:
"That's an expensive ingredient. A big component is the color pigmentation, and the shape of the lipstick is unique, which is also an extra cost. It's angled, like a diamond baguette, and because of that shape, you can draw a very precise lip."
Would you splurge your hard-earned cash on an expensive designer lipstick?
