While there are some studies that show that there are some health benefits to drinking alcohol, new studies show that even light drinking can increase a woman's chances of breast cancer. Yes, even one glass of wine per day can increase your risk of breast cancer.
Research, led by Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School and published in the American Journal of the American Medical Association, included a study of over 100,000 women who answered survey questions about their health and alcohol consumption from 1980 until 2008.
The study found that women who drink one drink per day on average increased their breast cancer risk 1.2 times; while women who drank 2 drinks per day on average increased their breast cancer risk about 1.5 times increased risk of breast cancer. It is believed that drinking alcohol increases a woman’s estrogen levels and therefore increases her breast cancer risk.
