Barbie has been everything from an engineer to a NASCAR driver, but one thing Barbie has never been is bald. Two women have started a campaign through a Facebook page which asks the public to push Mattel to create a bald Barbie. One of the women, Rebecca Sypin, has a daughter who is bald due to leukemia treatments while Jane Bingham went bald while fighting lymphoma. Support for the bald Barbie through the Facebook page “Beautiful and Bald Barbie”, which was created in December, is growing. Currently, the page has received over 18,000 “Likes”.
Those who are pushing for this progressive Barbie feel that a bald Barbie will create cancer awareness and offer support to girls who are battling cancer. Since Barbie is known for attempting to remove stereotypes about women, why not a strong, beautiful, bald Barbie? One Facebook supporter commented: "If they are making dolls that are inspiring young girls with careers then why not make a doll that would inspire young girls who are dealing with Cancer."
