If you love red wine, here is some great news for you! A new study out of Cedars-Sinai hospital found premenopausal women who drank eight ounces of red wine every night for a month, had slightly lowered estrogen levels and elevated testosterone levels. These same changes were not found in white wine.
For the study, published in the Journal of Women’s Health online, 36 women drank either red or white each day for about a month and then switched. They then had their blood tested to measure hormone levels.
Researchers determined that there are chemicals in the skins and seeds of red grapes that have similar effects as aromatase inhibitors. Aromatase inhibitors help managing estrogen levels are used to treat breast cancer. The change in hormone patterns indicates that red wine may curtail the growth of cancer cells.
Chrisandra Shufelt, assistant director of the Women’s Heart Center at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, said in a statement to the press: “If you were to have a glass of wine with dinner, you may want to consider a glass of red…switching may shift your risk.”
There is more research needed to confirm the study. And remember, red wine should only be consumed in moderation.
