DIY Beauty From Head to Toe

When I was a teenager, I did a lot of stupid things, many of which I would rather not put in writing. But I have to laugh when I think about the numerous beauty faux-pas I made by taking advice from the latest gossip mill of home-grown health & beauty fixes: mayonnaise for silkier hair; lemon juice for blonder hair; butter to ease a burn; Crisco for softer skin.

Yet as I age, I’m still curious about at-home beauty treatments and can’t seem to ignore the fact that there’s lots of information out there about how to create your own beauty routine at home. It makes sense, don’t you think? If store-bought products are touting natural ingredients like aloe, milk, and honey, why not use those ingredients to do it yourself—and avoid the preservatives and other chemicals?

So, click through for the results of my digging around for the most popular DIY treatments, for head to toe (and in-between) beauty.

A mask for your face: Avocado and carrot cream mask

The vitamin E and beta-carotene in this moisturizing mask helps to improve the tone and texture of skin. The recipe is simple and a great use of those over-ripe avocados you may have in the fridge.

1 mashed avocado
1 cooked, mashed carrot
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 egg, beaten
3 tablespoons of honey

Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix until smooth. Spread the mixture evenly over your face and neck and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse completely with cool water.

How about slathering yourself with baby oil and frying in the sun?! Ack! Talk about a faux pas. Especially with my red hair! Seems like I outgrew that awfulness early on, so maybe there's not too much permanent damage.

Love that avocado-carrot-cream mask. Sounds luscious.

I love those sugar scrubs, but they clog up my drain something fierce. Maybe by making my own, I won't have that problem. Thanks for the brainstorm!

Oh my goodness! A woman never does outgrow these fun beauty tips, does she! This was simply fun to read :)

I used mayo in the hair when I was younger. Thanks for the tips!

I confess to the lemon juice in the hair trick. Thanks for gathering these together!
