Imagine a place where women are all considered beautiful, respect is abundant, and femininity is equated with power. Childbirth is deemed a spiritual, magical act, and female elders are idolized. Such matriarchal, women-centered societies have existed, and some still do. Although finding 100 percent matriarchal societies proves difficult, cultures throughout the world have matriarchal characteristics.
Matriarchal societies can be very empowering because women are celebrated and acknowledged for their strength, ability, authority, and beauty. In these societies, women are like the beating heart, the foundation or force that gives the rest of the tribe life.
