Mary Kay’s Pink Mansion for Sale

If you’re in the market for a pale pink mansion, look no further. The former home of cosmetics queen and Mary Kay legend, Mary Kay Ash, is on the market for $3.3 million. The pink mansion, located in Dallas, is 11,874-square feet with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The pink mansion, built in 1984, comes with a pink bathtub and a pink toilet but does not come with that coveted pink Cadillac.

Mary Kay Ash passed away in 2011 at the age of 83; however no one has lived in the home since the 1990s. The original asking price for the home was the $5.7 million the last time it was on the market. If you had 3.3 million dollars would you buy the pink mansion?

Hepatitis C Cases are on the Rise

Health officials now say that more Americans die from Hepatitis C than from HIV. Hepatitis C is an infectious disease contracted through contact with contaminated blood and, just like HIV, can be sexually transmitted. The majority of people don’t even know they are infected with Hepatitis C until decades after they have contracted it. They usually find out during routine blood tests which will show liver damage caused by the virus throughout the years. About 3.2 million Americans have chronic hepatitis C, and baby boomers are most at risk for the disease.

Dr. John Ward, hepatitis chief at the CDC explained "One of every 33 baby boomers are living with hepatitis C infection…Most people will be surprised, because it's a silent epidemic." There was also more injectable drug use during the 60’s, 70’s and 80s and screening blood donors for hepatitis C didn’t take place until 1989. The take away message: We need to improve health screening and care for Hepatitis C.

You’re Sick but is it a Cold or the Flu?

You know when you’re sick, but do you know what it is? Colds and the flu can have very similar symptoms but different outcomes. While a cold is relatively harmless in the long run, untreated the flu can lead to serious complications including death.

Determining which you have, a cold or the flu, is difficult but there are some things you can look for. If you feel as though you were suddenly hit by the illness there is a good chance it’s the flu. A cold tends to come on more slowly and you can feel yourself progressively getting worse.

Don’t assume because you’ve had a flu shot that you’ve only got a cold. Flu vaccines only work on a few specific strains of the flu. There are more strains out there and although you’re less likely to get them, it is still possible.

Colds and flus share many of the same symptoms, one of them is a sore throat, but the big difference is that a sore throat is often the beginning of a cold where as it comes along later in the case of a flu.

While there are ways to diagnose your own condition, its recommended that you see a doctor. It is recommended that flu treatments begin within 48 hours for the best results. A simply culture performed at the doctor’s office will definitively tell you whether you have a cold or the flu.

Are Cold Water Baths Good for Aches?

Popular among elite athletes, plunging into cold water after rigorous exercise has been used as a way to soothe muscle aches. Researchers now warn that this fitness technique, sometimes called cryotherapy, may be harmful in some ways.

UK Cochrane Centre researchers analyzed 17 studies that involved 366 people. In the studies team members spent between 5 and 24 minutes in 10 to 15 degree Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit) water after running, cycling or resistance training. The researchers determined that there is not enough evidence to support the technique.

Lead researcher Dr. Chris Bleakley, of the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, said: “We found some evidence that immersing yourself in cold water after exercise can reduce muscle soreness, but only compared to resting or doing nothing.” However Bleakley also warned that cold water immersion can also induce a degree of shock on the body. Those with heart conditions and Raynaud’s disease who use cryotherapy could suffer devastating consequences.

Nicole Richie to Debut Clothing Line for QVC

Fashion designer, actress, and reality star, Nicole Richie, is launching a clothing line for the shopping television network QVC. Boho-chic Richie already has two clothing lines, Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960 collection. Richie is also the mentor on the fashion reality show Fashion Star which will premier later in February.

The Nicole Richie Collection for QVC is designed with women of all shapes and sizes in mind and range in price from $75.00 to $260.00. “It gives me an opportunity to design for a much broader range of women ... I wanted you to be able to walk into your closet with your eyes closed and pick something special, ” said Richie about her new collection for QVC.

The Nicole Richie Collection, will debut on QVC on Friday, February 24 at 9 PM (ET). In addition, Richie will be on QVC during The Buzz on the Red Carpet to present three new items from the collection.

Poor Sleep May be Linked to Alzheimer's Disease

Poor sleep has been linked to many diseases such as heart disease and obesity. Now, researchers have found that people who have trouble sleeping may be at higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease-related symptoms.

The study, presented at an American Academy of Neurology meeting in New Orleans, included 100 participants between the ages of 45 to 80. Half of the participants had a family history of Alzheimer’s disease. Their sleep was monitored for two weeks. Participants averaged 8 hours in bed each day but only spent 6.5 of those hours sleeping because they woke up repeatedly.

Sleep efficiency is the amount of time a person is asleep divided by the time they are actually in bed. Those people who woke up more than five times an hour were much more likely to show evidence of amyloid plaque buildup in their brains. This is the type of buildup that occurs before Alzheimer’s patients display symptoms of the disease. Those participants whose "sleep efficiency” was less than 85 percent were more likely to have preclinical Alzheimer's disease.

Is Weight Loss Contagious?

Is it possible that weight loss is contagious like a cold or the flu? A new study out of Rhode Island discovered that people participating in team weight-loss competitions have substantial influence over how many pounds their teammates lost.

The findings were based on the results of the 2009 “Shape Up Rhode Island” campaign, which is a 12-week online weight loss competition. Participants who pursued weight loss with others on teams experienced similar weight loss results as their teammates. In addition, those teammates who credited their teammates for their weight loss lost the most weight. Study author, Tricia Leahey, explained:

“In our study, weight loss clearly clustered within teams, which suggests that teammates influenced each other, perhaps by providing accountability, setting expectations of weight loss, and providing encouragement and support…Being surrounded by others with similar health goals all working to achieve the same thing may have really helped people with their weight-loss efforts.”

The study, out of The Miriam Hospital and Brown University, is published online in the journal Obesity.
